Since independence, the people of Kenya have been raising their voices against the successive regimes, literally begging for an end to corruption and chronic impunity that has brought this country to its belly. Now, the voices have gone from soft to wild, so daunting that the deadly force of a bullet is no match for the strength that the youth has bluntly manifested in the streets in broad daylight! The past opportunities squandered to deal with youth unemployment, to stop embezzlement and misuse of public funds, to provide free education, affordable healthcare, and so forth are now a golden time lost. This means that the things that were supposed to be done in the last twenty years will now be accomplished within weeks in a ‘gunpoint’ force of annoyed Gen Zs!
For these many years, citizen’s voices have fallen to morgue ears! The anger in the streets is not the wrath of a few weeks but the wrath that has been accumulating over the years of perpetual lies, impunity, corruption, and oppression!
For far too long, Kenyans living squalid lifestyles have watched, almost helplessly, as politicians steal their money in what can be termed as daylight robbery, they buy lavish homes, cars, grab prime lands, live as if they are Abrahams in heaven, and Citizens as Lazaros in hell. The cries begging for a little drop of water to quench the suffering of Kenyans have been met with arrogance and continued misuse, and even public officials flaunting their gold watches, expensive apparel, vehicles that cost a king's ransom, and so much insanity of massive proportions expressed by government workers.
As we stand, Kenyan politicians are amongst the highest-paid in the world. Kenya pays a member of parliament (MP) the same as the United States congressmen of the state of Maine, earns $70,000 per year vs Kenya’s $72,000. This does not include the KS15,000 sitting allowance Kenya MPs receive, which adds up to KS 240,000 per month per MP. This adds up to $73,600 which is higher than the United States congressman’s salary per annum. This does not include housing allowance, vehicle freebies, fuel allowances, and so many other robberies that ensue around Kenya’s political class payroll massacre! Further, the GDP for the state of Maine amounts to 75.5 billion dollars, vs Kenya’s 113 billion dollars. However, the GDP per capita (a basic measure of the value of the output per person) in the State of Maine is $61,000 while Kenyan GDP per capita is only $2099! What a crazy difference! The population of Maine is 1.4 million vs 55 million in Kenya! This data tells us that Kenya’s MPs have no business collecting such money while people doing a stellar job are earning less. This also means that if you want to become rich in Kenya, joining politics is better than inventing HIV medication! Making it to politics is better than conducting any business within the borders of Kenya. This is backwardness; it's gut-wrenching robbery, which is why Gen Z, ‘Dawa Ya Washenzi’ has come out to change! “Are we fools?” Kitutu Chache Constituency Senator Richard Onyonka asked his fellow Senators in a recent session to change the culture of thievery and bizarre impunity!
Many politicians receive so much cash that a Kenyan doctor can only dream. This is while Kenyans are suffering in hospitals for lack of medications and basic health services, living in sleazy kiosks and tents in slums in Kibera and all over the country.
COVID-19 economically ransacked and took all the middle class back to poverty, and the surviving poor people were consequently thrashed to a brutal economic hell. People who never used to lack school fees are now begging, and those who could afford fuel sold their cars and bought motorbikes, which they can no longer fuel due to crazy tax hikes and the general nature of the economy.
The government took the phrase "Punda amechoka" as a useless cliché and continued life as usual. Kenyans are tired, very tired, and very angry, and there is no stopping them. They were patient enough until their children's children decided to speak up for themselves! Going by the popular name GEN Z, these youths are not out of their minds; they are not crazy! No! They are a ‘badass’ movement and, as they call themselves, "Gen Z Dawa Ya Washenzi"! They are relentless; they do not recognize teargas; they are facing police an inch nose to nose and looking at the bullet eye to eye! They have come out to tell politicians that from now on, it's not business as usual; it's not suit and tie with a sack of money to bribe those greedy men and women masquerading as people of God. They have come out to say one thing very clearly: corruption and impunity, fake promises, and rudderless leadership have found a new opposition! The character of these protests is tribeless, borderless, and fearless! Corruption and impunity have met their match, and a new generation of voting has been unleashed that will change this country’s political landscape significantly so that the world will take notes! The people spoke in unison. The president could not ignore the wild noise and thus unconditionally withdrew the Finance Bill, forcing him to make swift and significant changes. Redacting the finance bill was and is not the end of the noise; Gen Zs and millennials are watching closely and untiringly acting like the government polygraph! They have made Kenya their business! Since the current politicians have vividly and categorically shown that they cannot represent Kenyans and have proved that citizens' voices are just puppy noises. Therefore, Gen Z decided to take matters into their own hands; neither are they shying off that duty as they summoned President William Ruto in their own comfortable docket in the internet of things! They started, and we all thought it was just a regular rant that would dissipate quickly, but they stuck as glue on paper or scorpion onto a muscle! It's prime time for present and future politicians to get the message. If they don't understand it, they should ask those who do because the writing is on the wall! In a country where few are rich and many are poor, the rich should fear or find ways to balance the scale. The government's mandate is to ensure that its people can do business and that the economy is well-functioning and is fair for the majority, not the minority, that the agricultural sector is bountiful so that food is not an issue and that citizens can go home daily with something in their pockets to cater for their daily needs. No one with a full stomach, a roof over their heads, and some pocket change has time to receive teargas in the fashion of a handball or enter parliament face to face with the saltless rice! Gen Z's message is in their actions, and it's easy to untangle and understand.
Blood In Parliament!
Young blood has been shed. Shed in the very premises of the parliament. Those young heroes whose faces need to be posted on large billboards across the nation as a perpetual reminder of the people who fought corruption, impunity, and lies and won! That blood will never go silent and can never be silenced! It will remain in our consciences as a witness of bravery, a call to duty, and an ultimate sacrifice of citizenry. We owe it to them to do the right thing and never take this country for granted ever again! Their blood cries like that of one of Abel's as Abel was a young man. Every year these young fellows have lost will be paid by the sufferings of the public thieves today and their generations in the future if change is not deliberate to honor their lives! God heard the cry of Abel's blood and cursed Cain.
Politicians, listen carefully; that blood that was shed on parliament grounds, in the streets of Nairobi, and across the country is all young blood; it will cry every day when you're in that parliament; it will cry when you sleep and when you awake, it will cry when you're in those billion bungalows and stupidly expensive cars bought with their money, it will cry until that day that it will catch up with all of you and your generations who continue to steal stealthily where citizens cannot see. God has heard the cry of their blood and will meet blood with curse and consequence.
To the Gen Z and Millennials
Your crackerjack courage and indomitable attitude were forces to reckon with. It was a show of undisputable patriotism. While catapulted by water cannons and dispersed by unbolted canisters, your fearless stances were emotional and outright inspiring. Your brevity in the face of brutality and your unflinching poise amid live bullets flying the parliament airs was an image that will never fade from our memories as long as we live! Your genuine charisma was impeccable. We watched you bringing phone thieves to the police who masqueraded as protesters and distinguished yourselves from what was defined as criminal behavior. We watched you do the right thing by example as you demanded the government to do! You carried the blind and the elderly through and away the teargas cloud. You have shown mercy to even the teargassed police, given them water, and rescued and escorted them back to their own trucks and lorries and Even so, they kept harassing you and hurling tear gas canisters in your direction, but you never moved and never responded by violence until they had provoked you to the most excessive force of live bullets! You answered a call of duty to protect the country from bad governance. A call that the world has admired. Your relentless efforts to voice your concerns peacefully amid teargas and bullets will go down in history as a day of reckoning for politicians and a day of victory for the patriots. My plea to you is to never forget that duty calls for responsibility, discipline, a defined purpose, and a decided commitment to protect this nation's sovereignty and never to dissipate into anarchy. We have a sacred duty to hand it to our future generation better than we found it! You're smart enough to see the realities beneath bad governance where you have suffered the most; you're also wise to know where to draw the line between protecting your country and ruining it. Tread slowly, and there is always time to reflect and see clearly that 2027 is not far off; we can take over parliament by voting all of them out and hire our young and intelligent people who can take this country where it belongs- to greatness!
Oh God of all Creation, Bless this our Land and Nation! Remember our fallen comrades, bless the Gen Zs and Millennials, and suffer them not to ruin but forever guide them to amicable peace! Viva La Vida! Amen!
